Recently, I was working with an editor on a short story (more about that when the anthology comes out!) and they mentioned that the story had almost been rejected because a child is injured in it. I made the suggested change, but it got me thinking about my adventure romance book, The Captain's Dowry. In it, a 10-year-old boy falls from the mast and does not survive.
Well, after talking to some readers, I decided to make the change. The boy does fall, and the main characters think that he doesn't survive, so that they still get the emotional consequences that they need to face in this scene. But the boy is rescued and returned to his family.
For those who have purchased The Captain's Dowry, the ebook should show the change automatically. The change should be live in all future paperback and hardback versions as well. I made the change for the library edition, including hoopla and one drive, but they are notoriously slow so I can't guarantee that the change is in place.
