The lizard is not lazy today.

She stands in the corner, white belly to the glass. 

Claws scrape the barrier. 

It fills the room: the sound of hopelessness. 

The outside world is dangerous. 

She cannot know the danger—the cats, the cold air. 

She would freeze on the floor if she escaped, 

Overwhelmed by the newness. 

The barriers are too strong, too thick, for tiny claws. 

I am not going to quit. 

I’m not sure I can.
